The Pros of Animal Testing
The Animals are similar to Humans: Chimpanzees share at least 98.4 percent of the same DNA. With organs being so similar, scientists were about to grow a human ear on the back of a mouse to use for a human who has lost their ear. Scientists have also used Baboon's bone marrow in patients infected with HIV and AIDS. The bone marrow only lasted two weeks, but researches learned a lot.
Animals have contributed to many life saving Cures and treatments: Nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted from research using animals. The polio vaccine, tested on animals, reduced the global occurrence of disease from 350,000 cases in 1988 to 223 cases in 2012. The use of chimps are "our best hope" for finding a vaccine for Hepatitis C.
Testing ensures the safety of drugs and products: In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the drug thalidomide caused problems to occur. The drug was found to act as an effective tranquilizes and painkiller and was proclaimed a “wonder drug” for insomnia, coughs, colds, and headaches. It was used by pregnant women to help with morning sickness also. After the women took this, more than 100,000 children were born with malformations of missing limbs. In 1933, more than a dozen women were blinded and one women died from using a permanent mascara called Lash Lure. The Lure Lash contained p- phenylenediamine, which was an untested chemical that caused horrific blisters, abscesses, and ulcers on the face, eyelids, and eyes for these users.
